North Carolina Beaches: A Favorite Perk of Living Near Raleigh

May 28, 2025

Why Living Near Raleigh Means the Coast Is Always Within Reach

A beach with a lot of sand and a blue sky on a sunny day.

One of the things we love most about living in the Raleigh area is this: you're never far from a change of scenery. Whether you're craving the crisp, cool air of the mountains or the salty breeze of the Atlantic, you’re just a few hours away. It’s one of those “best of both worlds” perks we always mention to new clients moving to the Triangle.

Just hop on I‑40, head east, and you’ll hit the coast in about two hours. Go the other way, and the Blue Ridge Mountains are within easy reach. That’s the beauty of calling central North Carolina home—you don’t have to choose between beach days and mountain getaways.

300 Miles of Carolina Coastline (and Counting)

The North Carolina coast stretches across roughly 300 miles of barrier-island beaches, each with its own charm and personality. Whether you're drawn to the laid-back feel of Emerald Isle, the vibrant boardwalk at Carolina Beach, or the historic streets of Beaufort, there's a spot waiting to match your vibe.

This beach cheat sheet from Raleigh Magazine offers a great snapshot of some of the most popular destinations. And while it’s a great starting point, it’s far from exhaustive. There are countless hidden gems dotting our coastline—quiet fishing towns, peaceful inlets, and local favorites you won’t find on most travel lists.
